Godfrey Sykes: The Minerva Sfrieze 

Godfrey Sykes' association with Sheffield began when he was a leading student at the Sheffield School of Design, which later became part of Sheffield Hallam University. In 1856, this association was strengthened when Godfrey became assistant head of the school before his career took him to London in 1859 and the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum.

During his time in Sheffield, Godfrey was commissioned to design a 60-foot long frieze for the Sheffield Mechanics Institute. The frieze consists of several painted panels portraying images of Sheffield artisans. For over 100 years this frieze has been hidden from the public. Now Sheffield Hallam University, in partnership with Museums Sheffield, will be exhibiting the frieze in its Furnival building atrium.
