About

PEBBLEDASH GALLERY 2 Leswin Place, Stoke Newington, London N16 7NJ. Private View 6.30-9pm Wednesday 9th December 09. Opening Times: 10th and 11th December 11am-6pm 12th December 11am-4pm Movement Material showcases work by artists Marianne Shorten and Caroline Tobin. Through drawing, painting and site specific installation both artists explore the inherent narrative contained in objects, viewing situations and apparatus. Each artist explores the suggestion of movement and animation at various points of artistic production, through the emergence of subjects via static image or object. Both artists work forms its own unique narrative by using the material of the image or found object to interrupt and fragment its original state, investing a drawing, painting or sculpture with the potential for movement. Caroline Tobin The interplay of theme, process and duration are explored in a series of intuitive drawings on layered transparent material. This work responds to themes and processes found in traditional prints and drawings such as works by Rembrandt, Da Vinci and Durer. The language of traditional print is used as a means to abstract and transform themes of the imaginary taken from science fiction films of the 70s/80s and Constructivist and industrial architecture. The fantastical event blurs with quasi-religious happenings in the production of layered pen and ink drawings. The noise of the image, its descriptive lines, grain or dots negotiating an outcome. Marianne Shorten The notion of play as an interstice between the inner and outer world has lead to a methodology which is largely concerned with gesture and automatic processes. Through the creation of drawings paintings and the use and alteration of found objects within an exhibition context this work is intended as an open narrative where visual connections and associations are created between the exhibited objects. Central to this practice is the use of abstract illustrative forms that refuse logical interpretation as a means to create a vacuum for the imagination of the spectator to fill. Caroline Tobin and Marianne Shorten graduated from Central Saint Martins MA Fine Art in 2008. Both artists are based in London.
