New paintings and prints by Jim Starr at The Dalston Superstore.

About

Bristol based artist Jim Starr has announced an exhibition of his work which will take place at the Dalston Superstore in east London. The exhibition entitled ‘New Paintings and Limited Edition Prints' will open on 10th December and run until 31st January 2010, with a private view on 9th December. This will be his third solo show in London and his most ambitious to date. Jim Starr's use of pop culture and pin up imagery is guaranteed to inspire anyone who loves the louche and the lowbrow. His work fuels the spirit and strikes a chord in the soul that continues to resonate long after the first glance. After an initial brush with spray stencilling in the mid nineties Jim moved over to screen printing having been influenced by Robert Rauschenberg and many of the painter / printmakers of the New York scene from the 50's and 60's whist keeping an eye on newer painters such as Jean Michel Basquait and Keith Haring from the 80's. Using a mixture of original screen printed material, photography, freehand drawings and collage he creates unique and sometimes complex hand-made prints, with no two turning out the same. For Jim there is no such thing as an average print. They can vary from five layers to forty and can take weeks or even months to complete. Having printed on to denim, silk, surfboards, stereo speakers and many other surfaces and substrates, Jim's bigger images are printed on to canvas and reworked and refined using acrylic and spray paint. His current work utilises his borderline obsession with timeless universal icons. These easy on the eye images skillfully offer an entry point into a complex world that has much more to it that first meets the eye. Jim's love of travel and insatiable appetite for all that is low fi flows through his images. East meets west, white trash snuggled up with the glitterati, good verses evil and all the in-betweens. Jim has exhibited in solo and group shows on many occasions in London and Bristol and has painted and drawn on location worldwide. His work has appeared on T shirts, clothing designs, flyers, records and canvases. Dalston Superstore is a unique two-floor space in the heart of Dalston's vibrant artistic community. The ground floor is a relaxed café and gallery by day while the basement is a multi functioning performance and event space at night. The changing gallery space showcases work from some of our most promising young artists. The Dalston Superstore has taken inspiration from many of the cafes and bars in Berlin and New York to create this unique new raw, industrial space for Dalston with large skylights in the roof, and windows at the front that open onto the street. The Dalston Superstore is located at 117 Kingsland High Street, London E8. www.jamesstarr.co.uk For further information please contact Heather Finlay at Sainted PR on 020 8962 5700 or at heatherfinlay@saintedpr.com.
