About

Nadia Hebson explores the capacity of art to reveal hidden truths by probing the boundary between the experienced and imagined, the real and unreal. Each piece appears to be a pure image, a reproduction of a person, place or event created in the classic medium of paint on canvass. In actuality each portrait or scene is the product of a complex process of social and introspective reflection which leads to the birth of a character or setting which is somewhere between real or unreal. Portraits arise from constructions of friends and self which are half remembered, half imagined. Shipwrecks result from intricately staged dioramas lit, photographed and only then painted. The ambiguous origin of such dramatic imagery at once stimulates an emotional response from and intellectual challenge to the viewer. September is an exhibition of work produced during Hebson's time as Durham Cathedral Artist in Residence from 2008 to 2009. Nadia Hebson studied at The Royal Academy School and Central St Martins. In 2008 she won the Sovereign European Art Prize and held a scholarship at the British School at Rome. Hebson has exhibited across the UK as a solo artist and contributed to group exhibitions across Europe.
