Some Exercise of Power

About

Potent and unnerving, these sculptures are typical of Ana Maria Pacheco's work in that they demand a reaction from the onlooker. The initial shock is due to the scale and presence of the figures but this is quickly superseded by an attempt to analyse the meaning, to decode the surface description of events - and in the attempt to decipher the scene, the onlooker becomes part of the drama. Between 1997 and 2000 Pacheco was Associate Artist at the National Gallery and her work has been shown in major exhibitions internationally. Mascalls Gallery presents two sculptural groups, Some Exercise of Power and The Banquet, from a series of three works produced by Pacheco under the collective title Some Exercise of Power. The exhibition also includes a number of sculptual studies and has been organised in association with Pratt Contemporary, Ightham, Kent.
