2009 Jerwood Contemporary Makers explore collaboration and a diversity of approaches to making

The X- Factor for knitters, interactive wall tiles and objects transformed by mutating marine organisms will fill the Jerwood Space in the next Jerwood Contemporary Makers exhibition. Seven makers whose practices are transforming the ways we think about craft have been selected for the 2009 show, which opens at the Jerwood Space in London on 10 June. Responding to the theme of Impact, these emerging makers will be presenting work that explores the unknown, the virtual, the risk and desire of making.

This exhibition will acknowledge how today’s craft operates in society – connecting through social interaction and collaboration between people and disciplines, as well as inhabiting the spaces of consumer society: the factory, the retail environment, the home and the garbage tip.

Committee - product design
Linda Florence - surface textiles
Julia Lohmann - design
Geoffrey Mann - product art
Rachael Matthews - knitting
Claire Norcross - lighting
Ismini Samanidou - woven textiles

Two events are taking place during the exhibition:

Monday 29 June 6-8pm: ‘bring and make’ night
Share your knitting problems, make a domino floor pattern and craft your very own paper lanterns at the Jerwood Contemporary Makers ‘bring and make night’.

This hands-on, interactive night will be led by Linda Florence (textiles), Claire Norcross (lighting) and one of the UFO Project Administrators. All creations will be photographed at the end of the night!

Visitors are invited to bring along their unfinished – and problem - knitting for the UFO Project Administrator to solve

Monday 6 July 6-8pm: Meet the Makers
Martina Margetts, Senior Tutor in Critical and Historical Studies at the Royal College of Art, in conversation with Geoffrey Mann (product art), Ismini Samanidou (woven textiles) and Claire Norcross (lighting). These artists will share and discuss their approaches to making in relation to production, factories and new technology.

Entry is free but booking is essential on 020 7654 0171, jva@jerwoodspace.org.uk
