About

Lisson Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of new works by British artist Jonathan Monk. Monk presents the same body of work in two parallel exhibitions: The Deflated Inflated at Lisson Gallery, London (20 May — 13 June, 2009) and The Inflated Deflated at Casey Kaplan Gallery, New York (7 May — 20 June, 2009). The Deflated Inflated questions the status of sculpture. The exhibition centres on a series of five highly polished stainless steel sculptures, measuring approx 100 x 50 x 40 cm. The work takes the iconic sculpture Rabbit (1986) by American artist Jeff Koons as its reference point, represented in different states of deflation. In the 1980s, Jeff Koons raised everyday mundane objects to iconic status. Monk's work reflects on the potential crisis of sculpture, while taking on additional connotations related to the highs and lows of the art market.
