About
Nobuyoshi Araki, Athanasios Argianas, Ulla von Brandenburg, Tom Burr, Gillian Carnegie, Steven Claydon, Cerith Wyn Evans, Lothar Hempel, Mark Leckey, Aida Ruïlova, Dirk Stewen, JD Williams."Pale Carnage presents work by a number of international artists addressing ideas of cruelty, desire, beauty, decadence, voyeurism and violence.
Evoking the culture and history of the late 19th and early 20th Century, the exhibition explores the relationship between classicism and modernism and its unsettling association with fascism. Fascism encompassed both the ancient and modern, harking back to classical art, architecture and imagery, while at the same time championing a horrifying kind of futurism.
Some of the artists in this show revisit the aesthetic sensibilities of the time, others make work that draws heavily on the rich historic and cultural legacy of this extraordinary period.
This exhibition includes both emerging and more established artists, some have never been shown in the UK before, others are presented here in a challenging and starkly original context. A number of the works have been produced especially for this exhibition."
