About

VIVID is delighted to present new work by Ran Huang and Nika Oblak & Primoz Novak. The artists will be in residence at VIVID throughout Spring 2009 as part of the two year European Media Artists in Residence Exchange programme. Their residencies will culminate in an exhibition at VIVID from Thu 30 April - Sat 16 May 2009 (open Thu-Sat, 12-5.30 PM, admission FREE). RAN HUANG During his residency at VIVID Huang will produce a moving image work in response to the cultural dichotomies implicit within the relationship between the East and the West. In turn this work will reflect on wider, global concerns of the human condition, such as love, hate, coexistence and hostility. Huang's new work ‘Boxing' will attempt to reflect this inextricable cultural situation in a work that fuses, what is traditionally considered an aggressive, sport with a sexual tension - in a somewhat absurd and exaggerated interpretation of reality. NIKA OBLAK & PRIMOZ NOVAK "Contemporary art is nothing but a business, we take it as a joke" Nika Oblak and Primoz Novak are the final artists in residence at VIVID for the EMARE programme. During their residency they will work on a new commission which adopts and critiques the visual tactics employed by media companies to seduce the consumer. Oblak and Novak will replicate a series of advertising posters where they will feature as protagonists. With support from the European Union Culture 2007 - 2013 programme, the newly established European Media Art Network has awarded 16 residencies to emerging international artists working in digital media, moving image and sound. This new network brings together leading media art research partners from the Netherlands (Impakt), Germany (Werkleitz), Bulgaria (Interspace) and the UK (VIVID) and ends in December 2009.
