John Hall - Artifice and Candour

About

Artifice and Candour is a poet's exhibition, an exhibition of work that see the look of letters as a part of the play of meaning, that responds to the way that printed words, far from being rendered obsolete in visual culture, are cnetral to its means and its displays. Artifice and Candour draws on over a decade of work aiming to produce short poems that treat typography, choice of frame and setting as essential parts of the work. For many years John Hall chose to work within the constraints of domestic technology, this decision went hand-in-hand with an engagement in the themes and currents of the imagery already occupying domestic spaces. For this exhibition Hall has adapted his text works (even conceived in some cases) for a gallery context.
