Work Play - An exhibition by Jeannie Driver

About

A new exhibition by artist Jeannie Driver displaying nine 6 ft spikes impaled with discarded ?office paper? and a video installation showing footage capturing the ?office mood? will take place at ?SPACE?, the recently established gallery at the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Portsmouth.

Work Play explores what it means to work in an office and the exhibition presents the site-specific spikes and footage from residencies in offices such as Portsmouth City Council and Gunwharf Quays Management .

The artworks on display derive from Driver?s previously related innovative project, SPIKE IT, which investigates office workflow, production, consumption and waste. Rather than placing their paper in the recycling bin, officer workers were asked to ?spike? their paper on the 6ft files. Paper accumulates on the spike, creating stratified sculptures that visually chart the traffic of paper in and out of the office environment. The CCTVs used in the residencies raise awareness and create a dialogue with office workers around the issues of paper-work and waste as well as acknowledging workplace emotions. Participants said ?having SPIKE IT in the office made us think before we print? and ?SPIKE IT was a great stress relief?.

Work Play presents the artists ethos of exhibiting works that evolve from a direct interaction with an audience. Jeannie States ?By slowing down time, the work gives the opportunity to revisit the ordinary and the routine?.

Work Play raises vital issues of recycling and sustainability at the same time as exploring what is like to work in an office day after day. The artist creates work that responds to and re-presents those experiences. SPACE Gallery is providing a space for the artist to present the spikes as a collective, for audiences to reflect on the individual personalities of the spikes as well as the collective meanings and implications of office life.
