To kick off the beginning of the Project Space Festival Berlin, Import Projects presents a screening of Austrian artist Ursula Mayer’s Gonda (2012) - a recent landmark in contemporary filmic art, scripted by Maria Fusco and shot partly on a smoking volcano - that will be followed by a conversation between the artist and Nadim Samman.
The film “Gonda” (2012), adapted from Rand’s play “Ideal” explores the subjective notion of seduction, appeal and desire. Featuring all-androgynous actors, its main character is played by Dutch transgender model Valentijn de Hingh, and the film’s highly stylised scenes where gestures are stronger than narrative, advance feminist film theorist Patricia McCormack’s idea of “Cinesexuality”, which argues that spectatorship in itself is inherently queer.
Ursula Mayer is an Austrian artist based in London. Working predominantly with film, performance, and photography, her work has been recently shown in the Baltic Triennial, Vilnius; Whitechapel Gallery, London; and Performa, New York.
