Cathy Busby “Sorry” & Garry Kennedy “The Big Five”

EMERSON Gallery Berlin is delighted, to welcome back to Berlin two of Canada’s preeminent conceptual artists. After a hiatus of eight years, Cathy Busby and Garry Kennedy present back to back solo exhibitions with their first appearance in EMERSON Gallery Berlin’s showroom directly on the River Spree.

From 21 June to 5 July (Opening: Friday, 20 June), Cathy Busby will offer the latest installment of her on-going project, “Sorry.” First conceived over a decade ago, “Sorry” chronicles the very public apologies for wrong-doings by politicians, religious leaders, CEOs, sports stars, among others taken from newspapers and on-line news sources.. Using video stills and quoted text, the artist juxtaposes the confessions, penitence and posturing of a range of international personalities and celebrities. Given the close proximity of EGB to the German Reichstag, for this exhibition the artist will be featuring her full collection of images of apologizing politicians.

Following Busby, Garry Kennedy will unveil a new project created especially for the gallery’s expansive walls. From 12 - 26 July 2014 (Opening: Friday, 11 July), Kennedy will present “The Big Five.” The large scale mural work consists of the logos of Canada’s five most powerful banks. The logos are presented simply and accurately with one exception: The colors of each respect logo have been replaced by those of its direct neighbor. Even for viewers unfamiliar with the exact details of each corporate identity, the effect is subtly disturbing.

Both Kennedy and Busby display themselves as masters of understated subversion. While refraining from poetic license or commentary, the artists let the power- that-be speak for and reveal themselves with unintended clarity. The end effect boomerangs, giving way to an ironic example of speaking truth to power.

Duration of the exhibitions:

Cathy Busby: “Sorry”: 21 June - 5 July 2014 (Opening: Friday, 20 June , 7:00 - 10:00 pm)
Garry Kennedy: “The Big Five”: 12 July - 26 July 2014 (Opening: Friday, 11 July, 7:00 - 10:00 pm)
