HUSK is delighted to host Voices from the Waves, an installation of video, text and drawing by Haruka Komori and Natsumi Seo, winners of the Art Action UK Respite residency award.
Komori and Seo are based in Japan and have been motivated by the words of a person from the affected area by the huge tsunami: “Though it’s too hard for me to face it, please witness the current situation.” In response Komori and Seo have filmed the entire coastal area.
The work was born out of this documentation which began in 2011 April, consisting of video, texts and drawing that are centered around a recording of “K”, a resident of Rikuzentakata-city whom the artists have been visiting repeatedly. Komori captures in videos the situation and words of people as they are, while Seo composes the text interpreting the words and time on the spot afterwards. Through the work, the two artists try to convey the affected area they witnessed “as faithfully as possible”.
