Talk with Dr Ayres

About

Victoria Bateman, who recently sat for a portrait by the portraitist NAME?, will be in conversation with Dr Sara Ayres, last year the Researcher in Residence at the commissioning service of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Sara interviewed a series of commissioners during her residency, with the aim of learning why and how painted portraits persist in an age of ubiquitous digital imagery. Victoria and Sara will be speaking in the gallery alongside Victoria's portrait, at noon on 17 May. This event will be especially interesting for those inspired by the Annual Exhibition and who may be considering embarking on their own adventure in portraiture. Dr Sara Ayres was awarded her doctorate for her thesis on Gustav Klimt from Birkbeck College in 2011. During 2012-13 she acted as a postdoctoral research assistant on a project at Kingston University examining the work of prolific portrait sculptor Ivor Roberts-Jones, which led to the publication of her chapter, ‘Ivor Roberts-Jones' Standing Bronze Portraits of Winston Churchill in Oslo, New Orleans and Prague' in Jonathan Black's, Abstraction and Reality: the Sculpture of Ivor Roberts-Jones (2013). In 2013 Sara was Researcher in Residence at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, funded by Creativeworks London, where she developed a project to scope future markets for commissioned, painted portraits. Her article ‘Staging the Female ‘Look': A Viennese Context of Display for Klimt'sDanaë‘ will be published in the Oxford Art Journal later this year.
