Momentum: A driving force gained by the development of a process or course of events.
Mmntm explores the changing aspects of modern art practice and the impact this has on emerging artists. In a financially unsettled climate where material costs rise, studio prices surge and funding for the arts has dwindled, by what means does the artist sustain their practice? Self-funding projects through more uniformed means such as long working hours and numerous jobs has become a necessity, but full-time employment comes at a cost: time. Against the odds artworks continue to be produced and displayed but without the luxury of a period for group reflection, they can become conceptually stagnant and uninventive.
By creating the time and space for discussion, Mmntm becomes an extension and redirection of the critical process, where the display of new works operates in the space between seminar and exhibition. The no vowel shorthand demands the rapid succession of ideas and encourages active viewer input. Contributing artists invite fellow makers, spectators and the wider community to recreate studio culture in the public realm, heightening a consciousness of current art practice and exploring the parameters of the exhibition.
Mmntm features work from: Chloe Bernadette, Laurence Jones, Daniel Lambert, Robert Manning, Iona Rowland, Owen Thackeray, Alice White and Alice Woodhouse
