Emerge celebrates the creative practices of Surface Gallery’s volunteers. It is a presentation of the capability of local artists and designers from different backgrounds who offer their free time to expanding their knowledge of the arts world, and educating others in the everyday running of a contemporary art gallery.

We would like to celebrate the achievement of our volunteers who will use the gallery to showcase their various talents. At last year’s volunteer exhibition, a visitor commented on the works saying they found “Some very thoughtful and beautifully executed pieces from the volunteers”.

Eleven volunteers will participate in Emerge, displaying artworks ranging from upcycled furniture, surreal painting and cyanotypes to stop-motion animation, handmade prints, photography and crochet. Visitors will have the opportunity to see traditional forms of art making as well as contemporary practice and design.

Visitors are encouraged to engage with Emerge through a selection of informal artist-led workshops that will be held through the duration of the exhibition. They will include; a printmaking workshop using woodcutting, an architectural model and technical drawing lesson, a review writing group and a discussion about sourcing local and eco-friendly materials for craft projects. The dates of these workshops will be announced in the coming weeks on our website and social media channels. To register your interest in advance please email us at surfacegallery@gmail.com

Since Surface Gallery’s foundation fifteen years ago at Nottingham Community Voluntary Service, it has remained an organisation entirely run by volunteers as a co-operative - giving each volunteer equal say in the running of the gallery. It has also remained self-sufficient by not relying on external funding to operate whilst maintaining it’s not-for-profit ethos. All the money made by the gallery goes back into improving the overall experience it offers to volunteers, artists and visitors.
