New collages by Adam King
CANAL is delighted to present new collages, sculptures and prints by Adam King.
King's narrative collages and mixed media works on paper cast a beady eye over the contemporary landscape. He proposes fantasy scenarios played out within imaginary yet familiar pastoral and urban environments.
Opulent vistas of spatial complexity contain magazine cutouts and drawings that spill across the paper in a kaleidescope of vignettes and coalesce in an epic sweep. His playful handling of materials reveals fractured surfaces imbued with a sense of optimism.
King samples a wide range of influences, from cinema and classic literature to art history and popular culture. He riffs on the cultural associations of materials - watercolour and the pastoral, or spray paint and the urban - to re-fashion forms with an alternative sensibility and subversive edge.
Adam King is a graduate of Wimbledon School of Art (MA in Drawing) and Brighton University (BA Hons Fine Art Painting).
His work is held in numerous private and public collections, including Saatchi, V22, World Wildlife Fund and International Collage Center. Recent solo shows include After the sky fell in (Burlington Project Space, RA) and Rollercoaster Vista (Platform 39, London). Group shows include Remix: Selections from the International Collage Center, a US museum touring exhibition 2012-2014.
The private view takes place on Thursday 20th March 6-9pm.
