Hanmi Gallery is pleased to announce the 31st interim exhibition ‘Painted Realties’ by four international artists that explore appropriation, authorship and identity through the materiality of paint.
Appropriation has become among painters a widespread resource in their work since the early 70s. The painters in this exhibition use different strategies that seem to keep painting and paint still relevant in the process of manoeuvring around this current ocean of visual data.
When abstraction and representational works are brought together we begin to see a language that disputes the classical antagonism between these terms. By looking at paintings more fully as painting, the works can be appreciated without the need to rely solely on specific footnoted theory. The seemingly oppositional languages inhabiting in the show are purposely set in tension in a way that the particular prevails over the general.
The process of painting is a resource for these artists to grasp the physicality of the image against the growing tendency of virtual relations and communications. Brush strokes, drips or impasto surfaces become essential for explaining the world that they inhabit.
