CAST: A Bespoke Touring Exhibition by Trish O'Shea11. Dec - 21. Dec 13 / ended Surface Gallery
Tues-Fri 12-6pm, Saturdays 11-5pm
This December, Surface Gallery will welcome Trish O’Shea to Nottingham when we host the second stage of her three-city tour. Having recently exhibited in Bradford, Trish will bring Cast to Nottingham before concluding her tour in Hull in the coming new year.
Trish has called herself an “adventurer”, someone who “sets out to find new and unseen places”. Trish is a kind of “forensic artist”, an artist that “‘peels back the layers’ of place and uncovers and reveals hidden aspects”.
“I like to walk the city”, Trish tells us. “I sometimes make sketches and sometimes write little notes or sometimes, just walk. After a walk I then make something. The resulting work is a response to my city ‘wanderings’ and the experience of say, the physical architecture, the time of day, the light, how places made me feel, what I heard, colour, form, objects—all sorts of stuff. I see the act of walking as a connecting and collecting force enabling the creative surveying of space and structure”.
You will be able to see the work that has emerged from Trish’s city wanderings when Cast opens at 6.00 pm on Tuesday 10th December. Those interested in participating in Trish’s creative practice will also be able to accompany Trish on one of her city walks.
The walk will take place at 11.00 am on Wednesday the 18th December, and will begin at Nottingham train station and end at Surface Gallery. Spaces on the walk are limited, so please email us at email@example.com for more information and to book your place.
By inviting you to accompany her on her walk, Trish hopes to engage people more fully in their cityscapes. We overlook much on our daily journeys through familiar terrain, our own back yards. Trish wants her audience to re-experience the familiar, “to see the seemingly ordinary as potentially extraordinary”.
As part of the Cast exhibition, and in keeping with the spirit of the festive season, visitors to the gallery are also invited to bring the city a gift for Christmas. Leave a note telling us why you have chosen that particular gift. What would you like to give to Nottingham? Why? What will you bring to Cast?
