Atomica Gallery is proud to announce its next exhibition of original work: Life & Lives by Spanish artist Ricardo Cavolo.
Ricardo Cavolo will present a brand new series of 15 portraits of society’s outsiders. Having recently moved from Madrid to Brighton, Life & Lives will be his debut UK show and follows previous solo exhibitions in Spain and Russia and group shows in France, Canada and Germany.
Influenced by outsider and folk art, which he admires for its purity and expressiveness, Cavolo’s vibrant work has a powerful primitive quality. He has developed a distinctive style in which he uses a series of metaphorical symbols within his subject’s faces, allowing him to tell an entire life story through a single portrait.
In Life & Lives each of Cavolo’s paintings depicts a character living on the margins of society, or as Cavolo puts it, ‘the b-side of life’. An outsider artist, an abandoned child, a tattooed prisoner, a boy raised by dogs, an Indian girl from the slums. He is compelled to tell their stories. And in doing so Cavolo’s portraits have grown in complexity: they are more detailed than previous work and are filled with minutiae that extends beyond the life of the individual to explore universal themes. He says:
“Every portrait speaks about something big in life: love, madness, roots, bravery, misery, hope...and at the same time it is a portrait of a particular person in the world. A portrait can hold an entire universe in a single face.”
Working mainly with primary colours for their immediacy, Cavolo’s portraits are rendered using traditional materials and techniques such as watercolors, colored inks, acrylics and brushes on paper. As well as 15 portraits, the installation will include a site-specific mural that Cavolo will be painting live in the gallery in the lead up to the opening night.
