Candy-coloured sculptures readdress archetypal themes at the RBS
The Royal British Society of Sculptors is delighted to announce Sam Shendi as the winner of its FIRST@108 Public Art Award, a prize of £10,000 prize to create his first large scale public sculpture. Shendi won the FIRST@108 Award with his colourful, engaging proposal, ‘Evolution’. The full-scale version of this work will make its debut in the forecourt of the RBS, accompanied by an exhibition of Shendi’s striking new work in the RBS Galleries. Firmly based in modernist morphology, Sam Shendi’s colourful architectural forms abbreviate the human figure and nod to his background in monumental sculpture and interior design. Shendi juxtaposes cartoonish technicolour blocks, conjuring associations with children’s toys and industrial design and lending his pieces an emotive and playful quality. His candy-coated palette animates the archetypal themes he addresses in his work.
