Newlyn Art Gallery
Transition is a unique opportunity for artists to try ideas and experiment for a week in a gallery setting.
Transition has been a successful annual contribution to Newlyn Art Gallery’s exhibition programme since 2000. It offers artists the chance to use the time and space to consider how a series of work is developing, or to try ideas for an installation or interactive project. Each project is in a constant state of flux, as the artist works in the gallery without the constraints of a finalised exhibition.
Transition provides visitors with access to the creative processes that are usually hidden behind the closed doors of a studio. A total of eight artists, working in all media, will participate over the four weeks.
Throughout each week the artists re-evaluate their work and respond to visitors’ comments.
To mark this tenth edition, there will be an online archive of the 100 or so artists that have participated in projects ranging from a race track made of 4000 toy cars, the construction of a victorian velodrome, and an artist’s offer to wash your dirty laundry in public. It is also an opportunity for painters and sculptors to view a large body of their work out of the studio. There have also been two Transition off-shoots, Curators‘ Edition (2008) and Performance Transition (2011).
