Yair Meshoulam: The Texture of Consciousness20. Sep - 13. Oct 13 / ended Weekend Gallery
Open Fri - Sun, 11am - 6pm.
Opening this September in Berlin, The Texture of Consciousness / Textur des Bewußtseins is a unique and expansive collection of eighteen painting and drawing works created by Yair Meshoulam between 1994 and 2013.
Opening at the Weekend Galerie in Charlottenburg on Saturday 21st September, The Texture of Consciousness / Struktur des Bewußtseins reveals Yair Meshoulam’s deep and often personal quest over the past nineteen years, towards his very own kind of awakening to consciousness.
A free and open process of abstract assimilation allows Meshoulam to merge disparate images and form new perspectives. ‘The process I use is about creating flow and activity, finding a really conducive mood to think up new ideas, maximising mistakes and problem solving as a result.’
Included in the show is 2007 work ‘Auto Self-Consciousness’ (Pictured above), as well as works from the newly composed Body Grain series, exploring new representations of the human body. ‘The dynamics between the functional anatomical drawings and the more abstract painted panels is something that has developed over the years. It is like a fossil of an animal embedded in a rock. The two become one, and that seems to be a reoccurring theme in the exploration of consciousness.’
Meshoulam’s works transpose figurative drawings onto painted panels that provide him with a smoother and more responsive surface.
Having allowed his method and process to grow and blossom in the most open and autonomous manner possible, Struktur des Bewußtseins presents the most extensive documentation of Meshoulam’s results to date. ‘I dont know exactly how other people react, how can you? I hope they look closer and find something more, like a portal into another world, or even back into this one.’
A selection of Meshoulam’s work from 2012’s joint Arab Spring exhibition with Jad Salman in Berlin will also be available for viewing alongside Struktur des Bewußtseins, addressing issues of awakening to political consciousness.
Subsequent to the exhibition at the Weekend Galerie, a publication documenting the works of Struktur des Bewußtseins alongside articles exploring the matter of consciousness from both a medical and philosophical perspective, with authors including Robert Silman (Neurologist and Philosopher), Dr Karl-Heinz-Pantke (Locked-in syndrome specialist, Krankenhaus Königin Elisabeth) and Mark Fielding (London School of Philosophy) will be produced in coordination with Tambar Arts Press, London.
Details of speakers at the opening evening on Saturday 21st September will be announced in due course.
