A collection of new work by Pam Hawkes
Forgotten Fables debuts 8 tantalising and sensual paintings from established artist Pam Hawkes:
“The characters in my paintings don’t readily give away their stories, their histories of desire or love, and we are unsure if they are trapped within this world of their own mysterious myth-making or are our active participants. What we are sure of is the seduction of this world, where knowingly idealised characters, not quite of our time, invite us to speculate on not only their lives but our own forgotten fables.”
In these idealised paintings we are invited to enter a playful world where time is suspended in a totally believable paradigm. The figures suggest the inner character of the subject, as well as the emotion and undisclosed narrative that lies beneath the paint’s surface.
Within the shallow boundaries of the pictorial space most of the references to time, place or distance become delightfully ambiguous, obscured by unlikely and improbable objects frozen into impossible positions.
Influenced though they are by illuminated manuscripts, religious iconography and the mesmerising portraits of renaissance Italy, these works are startlingly contemporary, and add a new and exciting dimension to the traditional framework of English portraiture.
Celia Lendis Galleries is proud to present the long awaited first solo exhibition from Pam Hawkes at the gallery.
