Monday - Saturday 10.00 -5.00 pm
East Anglia based former students of the Royal Academy Schools, London, will be showing recent paintings, prints and drawings at Mandell's Gallery 30th August - 15th September.
Founded in 1768, the Royal Academy provided a free place of study for artists and sculptors. This altruistic tradition has endured to the present day. Formerly the teaching and philosophy was academic; William Blake, JMW Turner, John Constable and John Everett Millais joined the student ranks, more recently Anthony Caro and John Hoyland. Today students benefit from a more contemporary education which continues to promote individuality and personal vision. The exhibition will include well known artists from the region including John Kiki, Brian Whelan and Ivy Smith.
The established abstract painter John Holden, also a former student who studied in the same year as some of the artists and taught several generations of students at the Schools commented:
“ The East Anglia Group of artists have continued to make and exhibit on a regular basis since graduation which for many is a lifetime. The diversity of ideas and methods can often be attributed to discoveries made during their studies. The quality of ideas and the clarity of realisation reflects well on their passion, commitment and ambitions. To do and to make means everything. All have a wonderful integrity.”
