Katie Aggett - Visible City
Visible City, is an exhibition inspired by the living, breathing city we inhabit. Ever expanding and contracting, scars in the fabric capture memories and traces of movement. The play of architectural form, growth, movement and memory is revealed through charcoal drawings and sculptural forms within the gallery space. Through material correspondence and composition, the artwork engages in reciprocity between drawn and sculptural form. The relationship between the sculptures and drawing is intertwined into a play of sculptural mark making with charcoal. The composition of sculptures to drawings within the gallery space, sit together as marks made upon and within the space.

Looking forward to this exhibition by the Jerwood Drawing Student Prize winner KATIE AGGETT. This is her first solo show in London at The Foundry Gallery.
The Foundry Gallery is a not for profit Contemporary Art Space and Gallery established in 2010 by Jonathan Goode and Jason Slocombe of Le Lay Architects.
We are dedicated to working with emerging artists and exhibit a wide range of work informed by contemporary artistic practice, across multi-disciplines: from the traditional to the experimental.
In collaboration with the artist we support the development of new work. We act as a catalyst, giving the artist the freedom to explore their existing and new ideas, enabling them to produce exciting work, and giving them the opportunity to examine their own practice and move their career forward.
We hope to provide the chance for Artists to exhibit work, free from commercial pressures, in a central location in Chelsea, London.

Katie Aggett's exhibition at the Foundry is an array of delicate, considered decisions. Her pen drawings on paper are meticulously drawn; lines build up to create forms, mass and space. The sculptures in the gallery sit tentatively as plaster casts rest or perch on solid wood. Yet together, assembled, they are bold and confident, each speaking to one another as the scale and materials are echoed from one to another.
On some of the casts, the surface is marked in the same way as the drawings. Each material has been altered by Aggett's hand to transform the material, either subtly or drastically. One cannot help but think of the title of the exhibition 'Visible Cities' when looking at the work. They do not spell out architectural buildings but rather how spaces are interacted with. The sculptures are static but appear to suggest change in the way that they are created - built up components and parts rather than set-in-stone sculptures. In the same way, a sight specific work is created on the wall in the gallery - charcoal has been lightly marked from the ceiling, down the walls until it peters out to nothing near the floor. In contrast to the mark, tape is built up and cut away in a precise form, weaving underneath the charcoal mark and onto the floor as it disappears...
