Still Life by Thelma Hulbert, Jessica Cooper and Vanessa Bowman
2013 marks the centenary of the birth of the artist Thelma Hulbert and, as a special tribute, a collection of Thelma’s Still Life canvases will be shown at the gallery which bears her name, starting on 16 March.
In a unique exhibition exploring how different women artists see familiar everyday objects, visitors will be able to view rarely shown works by the late Thelma Hulbert alongside Still Life paintings by living contemporary artists Jessica Cooper and Vanessa Bowman.
Thelma Hulbert’s name became synonymous with Still Life subjects during her long working period (1934-1994.) She said of herself that she became fascinated with the objects that surrounded her in her everyday life.
Similarly, Jessica Cooper’s influences are drawn from her immediate environment, which she is "continually exploring…seeking simplicity in the chaos of everyday life.”
Vanessa Bowman’s Still Life are observations of the simple beauty found in everyday objects with each one placed deliberately within the painting’s framework, like “a moment captured in time.”
