Dance and Art Forum | How to make dance work in a gallery?

Why would you want to show dance/performance as an exhibition in your gallery? As a dance artist how do you make the first move? As a curator how do you find out about these dance artists' work? Since the '60s we have become used to performance in galleries. But generally it happens as events, something of a one-off, not as an exhibition per se. More recently choreographers and curators have started developing collaborations that have resulted in choreographed exhibitions such as Une Exposition Chorégraphiée (2008) by curator Mathieu Copeland or The Collection, 2009 by Siobhan Davies Dance. We now want to discuss and share our interest in making and presenting a new form of dance that can only be presented and seen at close range in a gallery-like context. But how does it work? Where is it going? This is what we want to find out. If this intrigues you or you have more you want to talk about, Dance and Art Forum is the place for you. Dance and Art Forum is hosted by Siobhan Davies Dance and will run using the Open Space Technology as an opportunity for artists, curators and producers to meet up and talk as well as see work/performances installed throughout the Studios. The event will be facilitated by Phelim McDermott, co-artistic director of Improbable, a theatre company who have been facilitating Open Space in the UK arts community for the last six years.
